JOB DESCRIPTION: Carpenters
• Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge
• Verify trueness of structure, using plumb bob and level
• Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saw.
• Layout work from plans or sketch.
• Build wooden structures such as:
o Concrete formwork
o Falsework
o Pouring chute
o Scaffolding, etc
o Forms for bridge
o Drainage structures
• Assemble and fasten materials to make framework or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue
• Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level
• Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace, using hand tools
• Hold plumb bobs, sighting rods, and other equipment, to aid in establishing reference points and lines
• Cut timbers, lumber to specified dimensions, and drill holes in timbers or lumber
• Clean work areas, machines, and equipment, to maintain a clean and safe jobsite
• Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of other structures such as highways and roads
• Managing one's own time and the time of others
• Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times
• The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem
• Ability to read blueprints and work from plans and specifications;
• Ability to interpret specifications and recognize lumber types and grades;
• Ability to keep simple records and make reports;
• Ability to instruct and lead unskilled assistants;
