JOB DESCRIPTION: The Senior Researcher, Lasers and Optics will lead the development and integration of sub-systems used to generate and control the properties of an optical pulse during propagation in high power ultra-short pulse laser systems.

Responsibilities:
• Lead technical development tasks
• Provide state-of-the-art technical information concerning pulse generation and propagation in fiber and free space pulsed laser systems.
• Create sub-system specifications based on commercial and Dept. of Defense related customer requirements.
• Plan technical development projects, supervise project team members, track and report project progress.
• Design fiber and free space optical system theoretical models to meet system specifications.
• Determine feasibility of new or modified hardware designs considering all relevant technical and business factors
• Define and perform comprehensive experiments, prototyping and test plans.
• Analyze test data to determine if designs meet functional and performance specifications.
• Create technical reports to communicate results of development efforts.
• Present test data and discuss technical results in group meetings with customers, Raydiance senior management, and technical staff.
• Define and direct the activities of subcontractors and external suppliers
• Work closely with team members from other disciplines such as mechanical, electrical and software engineering, manufacturing, and field service.

Required Experience:
• Qualified candidates must have extensive expertise and minimum 10 years practical experience with optical pulse characterization, optical fiber handling and free-space alignment of optical systems
• PhD Optics, Physics or Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 10 years practical R&D laboratory or product development experience
• Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers.
• Demonstrated track record of successful project planning, team leadership and execution in a multidisciplinary technical environment.

Software and Modeling: MATLAB, LabView, MS Office.

Ability to travel ~ 20%

Leadership Skills:
Work with the Raydiance R&D team to define, develop and refine the company’s research goals, align the company’s research and engineering resources with tactical objectives, and continuously improve the team’s capabilities in problem solving, technological innovation, and project execution.

Management Skills:
Qualified candidates will have the ability to manage projects and succeed at an individual level as well as work cooperatively in a team environment. Possess project planning and execution skills including; task definition, scheduling, resource planning, supervision, progress tracking, and project status reporting. Promote scientific rigor within the company’s R&D team, must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be adept at supplier and technical consultant liaison and direction.

Functional Mastery:
Qualified candidates will be able to design, characterize and integrate fiber and free-space components into high power laser systems. The Senior Researcher is expected to develop and execute research and development plans, and to evaluate the performance of new optical technologies. Knowledge of modern fiber based ultra-fast chirped pulse amplification laser systems is highly desirable. Candidates need a deep understanding of optical fiber theory, grating components, as well as pulse propagation in dispersive and nonlinear medium. Qualified candidates must have an extensive working knowledge of pulse characterization, optical fiber handling and free-space alignment of optical systems.
