JOB DESCRIPTION: COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT

Description
Operates a police or fire/medical Emergency 911 system receiving calls for service; enters calls for service into CAD; provides routine information to public upon request. Assists Communications Operators with dispatching of personnel and equipment for emergency service through use of radio and/or computerized or other types of communication equipment as required. Advices public on emergency procedures; determines if a dispatch is necessary; and gives referral information on other agencies. Operates various office equipment such as typewriter and teletype machine. Requests ambulance and wrecker service via telephone when needed. May train new Communications Assistants. Maintain various records and files. Performs other related work as required.

Required Experience: Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent plus the ability to transcribe 35 correct words per minute, and speak English in a well-modulated voice using excellent diction. Fluency in Spanish and/or Creole is highly desirable.
DOCUMENTATION: PROOF OF EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION. A transcription test (35 correct wpm) must be taken prior to closing date unless a transcription certificate of proficiency less than one year old from the City of Miami or an accredited agency or institution is submitted with application. The written and voice tests will be scheduled after the transcription certificate of proficiency has been attained.
NOTE #1: SHIFT WORK WHICH INCLUDES WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS IS REQUIRED AS WELL AS ON-DUTY ASSIGNMENTS DURING NATURAL DISASTERS! Applicants may be assigned to any of the following three shifts for indefinite periods of time: A – 6:45 AM – 2:45 PM; B – 2:45 PM – 10:45 PM; C – 10:45 PM – 6:45 AM. Beginning Communications Assistants will most likely be assigned to the midnight or afternoon shift, once training is completed. Candidates being given employment consideration may be subject to a polygraph, psychological exam, and an extensive background check.
TOXICOLOGY: PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEES SHALL SUBMIT TO A TOXICOLOGY SCREEN AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE. THE COST IS $33.00, THOUGH SUBJECT TO CHANGE. IF THE RESULTS ARE NEGATIVE, THE CITY WILL PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE COST OF THE SCREEN. IF THE RESULTS ARE POSITIVE, THE CANDIDATE WILL ASSUME THE COST INCLUDING THAT OF ANY TEST CONFIRMATION.
EXAMINATION: Applicants who meet the minimum requirements and pass the transcription test will then be required to pass a written examination which consists of the following components: Listening Comprehension, Coding, Reading Comprehension and Voice Test. There is a six (6) month waiting period requirement to re-take the written examination for the classification of Communications Assistant.
